The Traitors Card Game Review

4-8 Players | Age 8+ | 30-45 Minutes Playing Time

The Traitors

I’m not a big fan of reality TV, but I do love a show that has its roots in the Netherlands, and has now found massive success in the UK and the US, and it’s not hard to see why. What is this show? The Traitors, a game of deceit and betrayal. I loved watching the show on the television and am now playing the card game version from Ginger Fox Games.

The Traitors card game is a thrilling and strategic game that brings the excitement and intrigue of the hit BBC television series right to your tabletop. Designed for 4-8 players aged 8 and over, this game is a fantastic choice for family game nights, parties, or any gathering where you want to add a dash of suspense and fun. It is an innovative combination of card-based and digital play (it does include instructions for a non-digital / screen-free option of play).

In the box:

  • 85 Cards
  • Instructions / Rules Booklet

The game’s premise is simple yet captivating: players are secretly assigned roles as either Faithful or Traitors. The Faithful’s goal is to identify and banish the Traitors to win a share of the gold pot, while the Traitors aim to remain undetected and steal the prize fund for themselves. It’s a classic battle of wits and deception that will have everyone on the edge of their seats.

The game can be played by 4-8 players, aged 8+, with a playing time of 30-45 minutes. It is best played with a digital device but alternate rules are available for screen-free/no internet access play. For best results:

  • 4 players, play 3 or 4 rounds
  • 5 to 6 players, play 2 or 3 rounds
  • 7 to 8 players, play 1 or 2 rounds

The Traitors card game is easy to learn and play. You can get right into the action without a lengthy explanation. There is a handy QR code you can scan to watch a how-to-play video (much easier than reading the instructions).

The game includes 85 cards, with various roles and events that can change the course of the game. Event cards such as “Quiet Night,” “Banishment,” and “Murder” introduce unexpected twists that require players to adapt their strategies on the fly. The digital features of the game, such as app-assisted secret voting and murders, are a modern touch that enhances gameplay and keeps everyone involved.

Overall, The Traitors is a fantastic game of strategy and psychological mind games, packed with tension which is palpable from the start, as players look around the table, wondering who they can truly trust. A must-have for anyone who loves strategy games with a social twist. It’s easy to learn, quick to play, and offers a depth of gameplay that will satisfy both casual and serious gamers alike.

We love the digital play for the in-game events that helps ramp up the tension and suspense – it can be played without the use of a digital device but we found it wasn’t as exciting just using the cards.

The Traitors card game is not just about strategy; it’s also about the social interaction and the psychological mind games that occur as players try to figure out who they can trust. The game encourages communication, deduction, and the occasional bluff, making it a dynamic and engaging experience for all involved.

So gather your friends and family, choose your allies wisely, and prepare for a game of trust and treachery that will leave you wanting more. The Traitors card game is a standout addition to any game collection and a testament to the enduring appeal of social deduction games.
