Zippo Rechargeable Candle Lighter Review

Candle Lighter

We love useful Christmas presents in our house – this year especially as having had the expense of moving to a new house and redecorating, we have been trying to go for presents that are either useful or are a ‘treat for the house’. And if something ticks both boxes, well that’s a bonus!

The rechargeable candle lighter from Zippo seems to do just that. If you ever find yourself short of either matches, or lighter fuel for the little gas clicker, just as you need to light the kids’ birthday candles, you know the frustration of trying to light candles from the gas hob and burning your fingers. Except what about when the ignition has gone on the gas hob and you can’t even light that without the help of a match? We have been in that situation a couple of times, even resorting to asking neighbours to borrow a lighter on more than one occasion.

This candle lighter doesn’t rely on you having matches in the house or a can of lighter fluid. It is charged via micro USB, and uses electricity to produce an electrical arc that can be used to light candles or gas hobs. The lighter doesn’t produce a flame, has a heat point a fraction of the size of a flame, and because of the lack of flame and the long-reach, flexible neck, it can be used to safely and precisely light whatever you need to light.

The Rechargeable Candle Lighter arrived well presented in an attractive, retail packaging making it ideal to give as a Christmas gift. The box contained the lighter itself, a short USB charging cable and a set of instructions. We were sent the rose gold colour but it is also available in grey (Pebble) or red (Candy Apply Red).

The thing that initially impressed me was the feel of the product; we have a few Zippo products in the house, and my partner loves his Zippo handwarmer, and the weight and feeling of this product impressed us just as much. It is a substantial feeling, metal device that feels cool and reassuringly robust to hold. The lighter has an ignition switch, a safety switch and a charging port with charging indicator light. The barrel of the lighter is a rose gold finish, with all of the trim, switches and the neck of the lighter itself being silver. We have just redecorated our kitchen and have gone for lots of copper accessories, and this matches perfectly. It doesn’t look out of place on the worktops at all, and is a really welcome change from the old purple plastic one that we used to have out!

We have found using it to be incredibly simple, but safe too. The built-in safety features prevent young children accidentally lighting the lighter as you are required to hold down the safety switch with one finger and use your thumb to click the ignition. This produces a small plasma beam arc between the prongs on the end of the lighter which is then used instead of a flame to light candles or whatever you want to light. It is even windproof.

I have to rate this as 5/5 – the build quality is excellent, and the charge time of circa 90 minutes provides 50 single ignitions. This might not sound like much, but it is plenty and it is so quick and simple to just plug in if it runs out – no more rushing to the shops or knocking on the neighbours’ doors to light the kids’ birthday candles. Because it is so attractive and nicely packaged, it also makes a brilliant Christmas present for anyone who like good quality gadgets, or someone who likes useful presents.
