Little Red Riding Hood

At Our Family Reviews we love anything educational, especially toys and games that are able to educate, inspire but at the same time are really fun and playable. We also love to play board games and logic games/puzzles. Being able to combine a game with a logic puzzle that gets children’s brains working and thinking has to be an ideal toy and SmartGames have been able to do just that. They have created a range of logic games, some based on well-known fairy tales, that are fun to play whilst putting thinking and logic skills to the test.

SmartGames Little Red Riding Hood Deluxe is a one player logic puzzle game, ideally aimed at the 4-7 year old skill set (although even as adults we like to sit there and do some of the puzzles just to keep our minds whirring away). It is a logic game that comes with 48 logic challenges, ranging from Starter to Master, and each challenge only has one solution to get Little Red Riding Hood to Grandma’s house.

In the box there is:

  • Playing Board
  • 5x Puzzle Pieces with Roads
  • 2x Figures (Little Red Riding Hood and a Wolf)
  • 3x Trees
  • Grandma’s House
  • Challenge Booklet
  • Picture Book
  • Game Rules / Solutions

The idea is to lay out the pieces on the playing board in the same way on the challenge card and try and get Little Red Riding Hood to Grandma’s house, avoiding the Big Bad Wolf along the way. With a small board it shouldn’t be too difficult.

There are 2 ways to play, with or without the Wolf (if you are playing with the wolf you need to create 2 paths to get both into the house). There are 24 challenges if playing with just Little Red Riding Hood and a further 24 challenges if you are playing with the wolf as well (a total of 48 challenges with 4 different difficulty levels: Starter, Junior, Expert and Master).

To play, you pick a challenge card from the challenge book, which is sectioned into different degrees of difficulty, and lay out the trees, Grandma’s house, and figure(s) as per the picture in the challenge. You then take your puzzle pieces and start to create a safe path from Little Red Riding Hood to the door of Grandma’s house (if playing with the wolf as well, you will also need to build a path for the wolf to get there). It sounds very easy, and the first few puzzles are, but as you work your way through the book and the difficulty levels some get quite complicated and require good logical thinking skills, observation skills and forward thinking skills. If you do get stuck and really can’t see the way forward, the solutions are on the back of the challenge page you are trying to do. Depending on what puzzle you are doing, you may or may not have to use all the pieces to solve the puzzle.

Overall, this really is a fun and challenging logic puzzle for children that like to think and work out things. It is a puzzle that is indeed a very SmartGame, and is challenging, educational and fun!

With each of the 48 challenges only having 1 solution you really do have to use your brain to figure out how to place the pieces, building the correct paths you need to safely see Little Red Riding Hood home.

It is a very good game to help develop cognitive skills – spatial insight, planning, problem solving, concentration and visual perception. I found some of the puzzles reasonably challenging, never mind the children!

SmartGames Little Red Riding Hood Deluxe is a very impressive fun educational logic puzzle game that will challenge children’s minds and keep them entertained. It also comes with a family-friendly picture book with a modern twist on the original story that makes good reading.

Highly recommended.
