Beurer BR 90 Insect Bite Healer Review

Insect bite healer for treating insect bites and stings with practical light

Insect bite healer

Hasn’t the weather been glorious for the past few weeks (except the odd storm if you were unlucky enough to some as we did). The days have been bright, sunny and warm and at times very hot. One disadvantage of all this lovely weather is the bugs and insects, especially ones that like to bite and sting. With mosquitoes, midges, gnats, horseflies, bees and other small insects also making the most of the good weather, bites and stings from these flying pests can be irritating and sometime painful, but mostly annoying with the itching they cause. There are lots of ways to reduce the irritation and discomfort of itching and swelling from everyday bites and stings including ice packs, creams and antihistamines but we have been trying out a different remedy, one that requires no pills, potions, creams – the Beurer BR 90 Insect Bite Healer.

The Beurer BR 90 Insect Bite Healer is a chemical-free insect pen suitable for treating and healing insect bites and stings using heat – no creams or pills are required and helps relieve any pain, discomfort or itchiness.

When we received the Beurer BR 90 Insect Bite Healer, none of us had any bites. But after attending the school sports day that changed, and rather that being annoyed and irritated I was actually happy that I could put this little insect bite healer to the test!

The BR 90 Insect Bite Healer is a small handheld device measuring approx. 10.1 x 3.6 x 2.0cm. It weighs around 47g (including the batteries). It is not a flashy looking device and is extremely easy to use.

After spending a couple of hours standing out in the sun, apart from a sunburnt face (I stupidly forgot to apply suncream) I had also received a bite from something which resulted in a small, raised lump on my arm and was very itchy. I couldn’t wait to switch on the bite healer to see if it would make any difference. After installing the 2x AAA batteries (which are supplied in the box) I pushed the switch into the ON position and immediately a small blue LED light lit up on the front of the device to indicate that it was ready to use. On the base of the device is a small white ceramic disc (the heating plate) which I applied to the bite (after checking that there was no stinger and that it was indeed a bite). There is a button on the front of the device that has two operations, press it once and you receive a 3 second burst of heat to the bite or press it twice in very quick succession for a 6 second application. I tried it with the 3 second application which applied a hot heat to the bite wound and waited for the beep to sound to know when time was up. And it works! The heat application almost immediately soothed the itching and discomfort. It got hotter than I expected but it achieved instant temporary relief from the itchiness. After a couple of applications you forget that you have been bitten!

The heat application is quite intense and apart from instantly stopping the itchiness and the need to scratch the heat helps to accelerate healing and reduce any swelling.

Overall, this is definitely a MUST HAVE device to help you enjoy the outdoors over the summer months, especially if your skin is a tasty meal for biting insects.

It is so simple to use, although the heat is very intense and you will want to remove the device before the treatment is finished as it can feel painful – especially with the 6 second application. But for best results you do need to use for the full 3 or 6 seconds. When you press the button to apply the heat, there is a blue LED ring that will illuminate halfway to indicate the 3 second application or fully illuminate for the 6 second application. After use, the ceramic heating plate cools down in seconds.

It can be used day or night as it also features a light that you can turn on to locate the bite in the dark. It can be used for 300 applications.

Whilst this is a drug/chemical free device it can’t be used by everybody. It can be used by children over 3 years old (under supervision) and for self-treatment by anyone suitable over 12 years old, including during pregnancy. It shouldn’t be used by diabetics as in some circumstances pain sensitivity could be reduced resulting in possible burning. There are also warnings not to use on scar tissue or skin sensitivity issues, after taking pain medication drinking alcohol or taking drugs. The manual that is supplied with it (in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Turkish and Russian) covers when and who it can’t be used by – this can be downloaded from the Beurer website if you want to check before buying.

With a summer of playing in the garden and parks, going to the beach for the day, going abroad for a holiday, having a barbeque at home with friends or attending the plethora of festivals over the summer this is an excellent chemical free device that works well to relieve after bite pain and itchiness from bugs and insects and helps to accelerate the healing process. It delivers a few seconds of discomfort/pain whilst using it, but the results are worth it.

An excellent little device to keep in your bag or the medicine cabinet that instantly offers relief from insect bites and stings.
