Host Your Own Pub Quiz is a fantastic trivia game that aims to capture this beloved pastime and bring it into your home. This game is a celebration of the pub quiz tradition, offering a way to host a night of trivia fun without the need to step out to the local pub. It is a trivia game for 2 teams of players, age 14+ and comes with 2000 questions spread out over 8 categories. But there is a welcome something missing from this game, there are no sticky carpets!
In the box:
- 2000 Questions
- Answer Pad
- 2x Pencils
- 2x Flip Scores
- Rules / Answer Booklet
Host You Own Pub Quiz has everything that you need for two teams to go head-to-head in a battle of the quizzers, in the comfort of your own home. It comes with four double-sided decks of pub quiz cards (200 cards which feature 2000 questions on 8 different topics), a pair of really cool flip score charts, two pencils, an answer pad, and a rules/answer booklet. The materials are sturdy and well-made, ensuring that the game can withstand the excitement of many quiz nights to come.
This quiz is played by two teams over 8 rounds with both teams answering the questions at the same time, recording their answers on the included answer sheet. The team with the highest score total at the end of the game is victorious.
Setting up for play is simple, answering the questions is a lot harder. Split players into two equal-ish teams (it doesn’t matter if one team has an extra player). For best play, each team should have a mix of ages to try and cover as many questions as possible. Each team is given an answer sheet, pencil and a score chart (red or blue).
The quiz starts with a really tough challenge, naming your team. That can lead to a big discussion but hopefully not any arguments. With team names decided, and written on the answer sheets, drinks and nibbles sorted, play can begin.
Before the questions fly, another very important decision needs to be decided by each team. Each team is given a Joker. Jokers double the score in a chosen round. So teams must take a look at the categories and choose one that they would like to play their Joker in, picking one that they expect to gain the most points in for maximum advantage. With the category decided, they tick the Joker checkbox on their answer pad next to that category.
Categories:
- TV & Film

Now, let battle commence. Take a question card from each of the four decks. These are double-sided cards so cover the 8 categories and have 5 questions on each side. 40 questions over the course of the game. The cards are numbered (and each category is a different colour). One player from either team should read the questions out loud, one at a time. Starting with TV & Film (these cards are numbered 1-50) – the category order is on the answer pads. After each question is read out, teams should discuss among themselves and when an agreement is made, write their answer on their answer pad.
When all 5 questions from a category have been asked and answered, teams should swap their sheets (so no cheating occurs) and the answers checked (the answers can be found in the answer book by looking up the card number). Two points are awarded for a correct answer, one point for an “almost” right answer. Scores are marked on the answer pad. After each category has been scored the total score is transferred to the flip score chart.
After 8 rounds, the team with the highest score wins.
Overall, this is an excellent challenging and fun trivia game for adults. Players aged 14 and upwards can play but the questions are not too easy, they can be quite tough so the game is better suited for a mix of age groups and experiences, as you would expect in a pub team.
We love that the answers to the questions are not on the cards, this reduces the chances of any cheating or “accidentally” seeing the answers on the cards. All the answers are in the answer book and are looked up by card number.
The flip scoring charts add a great visual element to the game rather than keeping scores written on a piece of paper, although you still do have your scores on your answer pad in case of dispute. It also helps to increase the excitement and tension, especially when the scores are close.
The eight different question categories cover a good range of popular general knowledge topics. Some can be quite difficult, which makes the game perfect for mixed abilities without being too easy. It also makes teams talk to each other and decide on their best answer, a perfect social game.
The box itself it perfectly laid out so that the four desks of question cards are held in their own compartments, as well as the other components.
The game can take quite a while to play, especially when teams are discussing their answers, so you might want to put a time limit on discussion time.
We think that Host Your Own Pub Quiz is an excellent fun and entertaining trivia game for game nights more orientated towards adults. With 2000 questions, there is lots of playability within the game.
Host Your Own Pub Quiz is a fantastic team trivia game, an excellent pub quiz without leaving the comfort of your own home. Excellent game play, challenging questions and a great social and bonding experience.
It’s time to start brushing up on your general knowledge and Host Your Own Pub Quiz! You will even learn some new things.
