Phlat Ball Review

Throw a disc, catch a ball!

Phlat Ball

It’s a lovely warm day, the sun is shining, it’s a great day to get outside and play. Do you fancy throwing a frisbee around or playing ball with the kids? Either one can be lots of fun. But what about combing the two and playing both? Throw a disc but catch a ball? Well, you can with the Phlat Ball!

The Phlat Ball is a plastic ball that squashes nearly flat and miraculously turns from a disc to ball during its flight through the air when thrown! A great toy that adds that something different to outdoor play. In disc form it has a diameter of 9” and in ball form it has a diameter of 6”. It is available in 3 colour options (bright blue, cool green, or fiery red) and is suitable for players aged 5 years plus.

To play with the Phlat Ball the idea is to squash it flat into a disc shape (it has two suckers inside to pull it together) and then throw it like a frisbee. As the disc flies through the air at some point the suckers release and the disc transforms into a ball – you never know when it will happen.

The disc-ball is made of a soft but sturdy flexible plastic that makes it very easy to squash flat (or should that be phlat?). It is lightweight and very easy to grip so that players of all ages can easily throw and catch it. Being plastic, it is also waterproof.

Overall, this is a fun toy to play with in the garden or the park. Initially it needs to warm up whilst playing with it or you can speed up the process by leaving it in the sun or under a hot tap for it to fully pop open. Once it warms up properly it is great fun throwing the disc and watching it pop open mid-flight into a ball shape for another player to catch.

It is split into five segments that are easy to grip. We received ours in cool green and by pushing in the blue circle in the centre (with the Wahu logo) closes the suckers and turns it into a disc, this is so easy to do and does not require a lot of strength, so even the youngest of players can do it. The Phlat Ball features ergonomic indented grooves and ridges in the surface of the disc-ball that make it very easy to grip, throw and catch.

It is a good size for throwing about, and more interesting that a standard throwing disc / frisbee. While it turns into a ball for catching and throwing, the ball is not for kicking about as it could damage it and make it unusable as a throwing disc.

It is a good size to put in a bag to take to the park or beach, you might just want to put an elastic band around it to stop it popping open in your bag.

The Phlat Ball is a fun and interesting toy to have some fun in the garden or park and get everybody outside to enjoy the outdoors and have some active playtime. We have been playing with it in the garden and whilst it has hit the ground (grass) a lot it hasn’t been damaged – we couldn’t say how it would hold up on a more solid surface.

A simple toy that is fun to play with and pops open easily and quickly whilst throwing it about once it has warmed up – just try to keep the suckers free from dirt and debris for maximum performance.

Fun for the entire family.
