We all have to eat, but with the weather being as good as it has been recently it is great to get outside and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air whilst we have our lunch. But going for a takeaway or meal deal every day can get quite expensive and can be very unhealthy depending on what you go for. Making your own lunch at home to take with you is cheaper, you can have exactly what you want made to your own tastes, control the size of the portion so that you are not going hungry or wasting food and reduce food packaging waste. Once you have made your lunch you obviously need something to put it in, and there are plenty of options to choose from. If you want a quality, plastic free, reusable lunch that also looks great and is 100% leakproof then you can’t go wrong with the Black+Blum Stainless Steel Lunch Box.
Black+Blum are based in London, formed in 1998 and they create products that are eco-friendly where possible, made from long-lasting materials and designed to encourage reusability while discouraging single-use plastics and food waste.
The Black+Blum Stainless Steel Lunch Box is a metal lunch box with leakproof lid, metal fork and silicone strap to hold the fork in place. It is available in two different sizes: 600ml / 20 fl oz (measures L17.5cm x W13cm x H5cm, weighs 330g) and 1 litre / 34 fl oz (measures L20cm x W14cm x H6cm, weighs 460g). They are constructed from high quality stainless steel with a stainless steel fork and slider-divider to separate foods. They feature a vacuum-sealed lid, are 100% leakproof, BPA-free and are even oven, freezer and dishwasher safe (lid and silicone strap cannot go in oven or dishwasher).
It has a very minimalist design, featuring rounded corners and a valve on the lid to keep it airtight, vacuum sealed and leakproof. It also comes with a stainless steel fork that is held securely to the side of the lunch box using a colourful silicone band (you can choose from Ocean, Olive or Orange). Inside it has a removable/adjustable internal divider to separate different foods.
We had the 1 litre capacity lunch box, and this is a very good size for a sandwich or whatever else you would like for lunch (the smaller version would be good for children). It is airtight and leakproof with its over-moulded silicone lid design. The valve on the lid ensures extra security for a leak-free experience. The valve must be open for the lid to open and pushed firmly down to close. It is oven safe so that you can heat up the contents should you wish (without the lid and be aware that if using it in the oven the metal could become discoloured). It is also freezer safe, just don’t overfill as the contents could expand when frozen and stretch the metal. Inside the lunch box is an internal divider that can be adjusted to different sizes or removed so that you can easily separate foods or have more space.
This lid features a valve to vacuum seal the box and keep the contents nice and fresh. To ensure the contents stay fresh and keep the box leakproof, it has a valve on top of the lid that seals the lid – to open it needs to be lifted, to close it needs to be pushed down when the lid is placed back on to seal it again.
It is also very easy to clean. The box, without the lid, can go in the dishwasher, the lid and silicone strap must be washed by hand. The stainless steel body of the lunch box is smooth and very easy to clean without using abrasive cleaners.
Overall, this is a very good quality lunch box that is perfect for keeping lunch fresh and hasn’t leaked when we have had wet food in it. It isn’t too heavy and is very easy to keep clean. And with no plastic in sight, it is perfect for being reused over and over again for years to come. The silicone used for the strap and on the lid is better for the environment than plastic should it ever need to be disposed of.
