Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II Review

for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S

Call of Duty

Most people have heard of the first person shooter video game Call of Duty (CoD), the original game was released in 2003 and set in World War II. Over the years there have many newer versions of the game with the World War II series, Modern Warfare Series, Black Ops series and standalone versions of the game. Now the latest addition, and a brand new game, to the critically-acclaimed Call of Duty® franchise has been released – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, the sequel to the 2019 reboot, is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. We received a copy for our Xbox One to try out.

The game takes place in a realistic and modern setting. The campaign follows multinational unit Task Force 141 and Mexican Special Forces unit Los Vaqueros as they attempt to track down Iranian Quds Force major and terrorist Hassan Zyani, who is in possession of American-made ballistic missiles.  It features the return of the iconic, team leader Captain John Price, the fearless John “Soap” MacTavish, the seasoned Sergeant Kyle “Gaz” Garrick, and the lone wolf himself, fan favourite Simon “Ghost” Riley.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is a new game, not a reboot of a previous one. It has cross-platform support so that you can play with your friends anywhere on any platform (PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, and PC via Battle.net). MWII brings new gameplay innovations, all-new gun handling and advanced AI, giving players a truly immersive, state-of-the-art experience.

We received the download version and be prepared for a big download – it’s a massive 114GB!

I have only ever played the original Call of Duty and its successor Call of Duty 2, and I played these on a Windows PC. Obviously, the graphics and gameplay have hugely advanced over the years but when playing it on a big screen TV I was surprised at just how good the graphics of the game are, they are just amazing.

MWII can be played in single player, multiplayer and co-operative modes, so there is something for everyone in your preferred way to play.

Overall, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (has a PEGI 18 rating for player 18+) is an excellent immersive and enjoyable first person shooter, with incredible graphics and audio.  I am only an occasional game player but really enjoyed the single player campaign. The story is a bit far-fetched, but it makes for interesting action-packed missions that are lots of fun to play.

The graphics are just amazing, and the gameplay is smooth with weapons that are precise and accurate. The cinematics are great to watch.

The download is massive at 114GB and takes some time to download (that obviously depends on your internet speed and bandwidth use at the time) but it is a game that is definitely worth the wait.

If you like the Call of Duty games or indeed are new to them and just like first person shooters, then I think that MWII is an excellent game that you can easily immerse yourself in with modern weapons and high-end graphics.

If you are an occasional player like me or a serious gamer, MWII is visual pleasing with smooth gameplay and interesting campaigns. It is an exciting game to play and would make an excellent gift this Christmas for the gamers in the household, the download version is perfect for a last minute gift idea!

Call of Duty is a very successful video game franchise, and the 2022 incarnation will keep it going with its all-action gameplay.
